I think most musicians would agree with me that this Faust Symphony is one of the monumental works of the whole Romantic Movement. And one of my contributions to this survey is what I consider to be Liszt's true masterpiece his Faust Symphony. So, why not Liszt? Well, partly to answer this question, the New York Philharmonic, under its brilliant new director, Pierre Boulez, is featuring works of Liszt all through this season's programs. And this is an interesting question: why? Especially since Liszt was the most celebrated musician of his time about a century ago, and a tremendous influence on other composers, especially on Wagner, and on Debussy even, who are played all the time. But actually, he wrote tons of non-piano music - songs, choral works, symphonies, symphonic poems, whatnot.Īnd most people don't know them because they're simply not performed very much. But, as you see they're mostly piano music, which is natural, since Liszt was the greatest pianist of his time, and some say of all time. Which you've all heard in the cartoons and so on, or this one Or some of the more favorite tunes from the Hungarian Rhapsodies like this one, Which you all know is Liebestraum or the famous Eb Major Piano Concerto Really, a handful of pieces, mostly ones you remember from childhood, like this one After all, how much of Liszt's music do most people know anyhow? Of course, the reason you don't know what it is, is that it's so rarely played. And what's more, it's from his greatest piece, the Faust Symphony. And yet it's by one of the most famous composers of all time, Franz Liszt. And I'll bet very few, if any, of you know what it is. When Claire gives the direct-to-camera interviews on the sofa, which the show is known for, she holds a cushion. Whenever she's on screen, she's sitting behind cereal boxes or carrying loads of laundry. Julie Bowen, who played Claire Dunphy in Modern Family, was pregnant with twins in the first episode. The production worked around Louis-Dreyfus's pregnancy by dressing the actor in oversized clothing and wearing large bags, but it still felt natural, as the clothes looked like things that Elaine would wear. Fish is nowhere to be found on his last day before he retires Barney must deal with an out of control vigilante group. Barney must make a decision when his daughter wants to move out and asks him to help her pay for an apartment. Rather, APFS needs to focus on writing to each block a relatively equal number of times, so as not to wear out portions of the SSD faster than others. Because APFS is designed for SSDs (which can be read/written at equal speeds anywhere on the SSD), there is no need for APFS to write files to sequential spaces on the SSD. For spinning hard disks, HFS+ is significantly faster than APFS, especially with large files. This is such a difficult decision in 2021. I thanked him for his time, hung up and went to work on replicating what he said they did, sans clean room, just canned air for cleanup before closing the drive. When I asked why it was so expensive, this guy went into minute detail what they did: “see, we have to use a clean room to remove your platters and put them in a new working drive”. I got quoted as high as $8K to get my data back. I called a bunch of places, wanting to get my drive recovered. Lesson 1: never ever erase memory cards until the client has their photos in their possession. Luckily for me, the scratch must’ve missed all the important data, other than perhaps the directory which Disk Warrior corrected. That probably caused the platters to wobble beyond their design and broke the motor. I remember my ears popping at the same time as my Mac shut off. As an added bonus, full-length base layers also protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays, so anywhere you’re covered by a base layer, you don’t have to worry about applying (and re-applying) sunscreen. Regardless of which materials you choose, base layers like these pull sweat from your skin and boost your body’s natural ability to regulate temperature through evaporative cooling. Wool also happens to be naturally odor-resistant, which means you’ll smell less like a gym locker room after a long ride.Īndy rocking an undershirt long sleeve button up and a vest for comfort along with a bandana on his neck to keep the sun off it. Wearing wool base layers while riding motorcycles in hot weather may sound like a recipe for heat stroke, but a thin merino wool shirt is arguably the most comfortable thing you can have sitting on your skin. That means sticking with garments made from either synthetic fibers (like polyester) or natural, non-cotton fibers like merino wool. Kyles pretty darn good at layering up too. Specifically, you want to wear base layers that are moisture-wicking and fast drying. This may sound counterintuitive, but wearing layers under your riding gear is just as important in the hot months as it is in the cooler ones. She always wears a T-shirt, wool flannel and a jacket and if she gets too hot, she loses a layer. Staying hydrated keeps your body’s natural cooling system in good working order, and also prevents the sort of fatigue and exhaustion that can lead to unsafe riding conditions as well. We recommend guzzling a good 20 oz/600ml or so of water before starting out (about 3ml per pound of bodyweight is a good benchmark here), and continuing to drink at regular intervals throughout the day. Drinking water before you ride (aka “pre-hydrating”) is important because if you wait until you’re thirsty to drink, you’ve already lost the battle and will be playing catchup for the rest of the day. Your first line of defense here is to drink plenty of water both before your ride and throughout the day. There are a few things you can do to minimize the drip, but the simple fact is that your “swampier” regions are going to cry big salty tears constantly throughout the day. With zero air conditioning to speak of, a hot engine underneath you, and (hopefully) a full suit of protective gear on, you’re going to sweat, no two ways about it. Look, we get it: Some folks love riding in the cold, and don’t mind the freezer-burnt hands, numb feet, and rosy cheeks that come with the territory. Motorcycling is a seasonal sport, and we’ve all gotta get our miles in when we can. In addition to this risk/reward mechanic, the battles themselves provide huge scope for varied tactics and intense decisions. But which ones do you take into battle? The common cards that you don’t mind losing so much? Or the rare, legendary or even mythic ones that could potentially turn the battle quickly in your favour, but would also be devastating to lose? It’s a smart system that constantly keeps you balancing risk with reward – especially as the chances to heal followers are few and far between, not to mention expensive, so you’ll often find yourself with at least one or two wounded followers in your deck. BUT, if a wounded follower is defeated, then they’re dead – and gone for good. So if a card that normally costs four energy points is wounded and now costs only three energy points, you could potentially play that card straight off and have an advantage over the enemy’s three-point cards with lower attack. You start the first round of a fight with three points of energy, and every round this is increased by one to a maximum of ten. That means both the card’s health and the cost to play it are reduced by one, with the latter providing a distinct advantage in battle, since it gives you access to potentially more powerful cards at a reduced price. It makes deck-building just that little bit more personal when the cards have names attached – and all the more devastating when one of your cards/followers dies.Īnd that’s another clever thing – if you play a card and it’s defeated in battle, that card gains a wound. Only these cards actually have individual, procedurally generated names, and they’ll come to you with requests on your journey, as well as providing help in some of the scenarios you stumble across. And as with any deck-building game, your task is to craft these cards into a deck that balances attack and defence, card costs and complementary abilities to defeat the many foes you run into. The dying machine sends you on a quest to find a mysterious Crypt that may or may not provide salvation for the ravaged planet, and quickly you gather a band of followers to help you on your search across the desert.īut, cleverly, your followers are represented by cards, each with different costs, attack powers, health and, if you’re lucky, special abilities. Here, you play a ‘technopath’ prophet who can communicate with machines, and the opening sees a mysterious satellite fall to the surface of your home planet of Soma. And I’m happy to say that those years of dev time have paid off in a superbly polished and wonderfully balanced RPG.īut perhaps Mad Max isn’t the right reference here – the plot reminds me more of the wonderful 1980s graphic novel The Incal by Alejandro Jodorowsky and Jean Giraud (aka Moebius), which merged technical marvels with deep spiritualism. And today is the release date for Nowhere Prophet, an apocalypse-set, Mad Max-style card game that’s been in development for around five years. We’ve already had the excellent SteamWorld Quest and Slay the Spire, while the conversation-themed deck-builder Griftlands has entered early access. It seems that 2019 is becoming the year of deck-building RPGs. |
